The ASSET lab, in collaboration with the GFES lab in the University of Alicante, has secured over EUR 185k for the next 2 years to develop a new generation of solar-powered electrolyzers. The project: “INNOvative inorganic semiconductors and solid state PhotoElectroChemical cells for solar hydrogen production” (INNOPEC; REF: TED2021-132697B-I00) has been funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation within the Call for projects on Ecological Transition and Digital Transition 2021, thanks to the support of the AEI and the NextGenerationEU schemes.
Currently, the production of hydrogen relies on capital- and energy-intensive approaches that cannot meet the sustainability goals that are envisioned for the next years. INNOPEC aims at reimagining the way we produce hydrogen by enabling a low cost and compact solar-powered technology that operates at room temperature. INNOPEC will focus on exploring novel reactors’ architectures and photoactive materials to improve the efficiency and longevity of such devices well beyond the state of the art.
